The author was a descendant of Rabbi Shabethai Cohen, author of Sifsei Cohen – Shach, and a prominent rabbinical scholar. This work includes responsa by Rabbi Yisrael – the Maggid of Kozhnitz regarding the permissibility of an aguna remarrying, together with the original question presented to him, as well as a responsum on the case by Rabbi Pinchas Horowitz of Frankfurt and another by the author.

This copy belonged to the gaon Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Lublin, author of Toras Chessed.

Inscription on flyleaf: ‘This book belongs to the rabbi and gaon ... Rabbi S Z ... Av Beth Din of Lublin’, and another by his son: ‘Monday, Parshas Shemini 5639 [1879] Lublin, signed Dov Berish Ladier of Ludmir ... living in Lublin’.

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Lublin (1830-1902), author of Toras Chessed. Renowned for from a young age his outstanding Torah knowledge and appointed Rabbi of Lublin in 1868. An adherent of the Rebbes of Lubavitch and leading chassid of the Tzemach Tzedek. Prominent rabbinic leader of his generation. Emigrated to Yerushalayim in 1892.
