BEN-GURION DAVID: (1886-1973) Zionist Leader, first Prime Minister of Israel 1948-54, 1955-63. T.L.S., D. Ben-Gurion, in Hebrew, one page, 4to, Tel Aviv, 22nd February 1948, to Dr. Eisenstadt, on the printed stationery of The Jewish Agency for Eretz Israel, in Hebrew. Ben-Gurion writes to his correspondent on the subject of Hebrew juridical terminology and states, in part, 'The problem raised by you is much broader than the task which I have forwarded to the (Hebrew) Language Academy, since the scope of the juridical terms is much larger than the scope of general terms of administration…..I do understand the importance of the juridical terms especially as the Hebrew language will be not one of the official languages (which actually was not strictly obligatory under the mandate rule) but the language of the country. And all legislation and jurisdiction will be carried out in Hebrew. But the administrative ("mamlachti" terminology presents a special branch which is not exactly contained in the general juridical terminology. And in our time many constitutional arrangements have renewed themselves which during our full - or half independence have not at all existed. And their place is missing even in our earlier literature. This does not mean that all modern terms have to be translated and that there cannot be found genuine Hebrew expressions which can be given a new meaning…..'
