RABBI YEHUDA ZE’EV SEGAL, ROSH YESHIVA OF MANCHESTER, HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER TO RABBI MESHULAM YISSACHAR ASHKENAZI OF STANISLAWOW.

Interesting letter from Rabbi Segal, Rosh Yeshiva of Manchester, to his friend Rabbi Ashkenazi of Stanislawow – London regarding a student whom the Stanislawer Rebbe had sent to learn at the Manchester Yeshiva. The Rosh Yeshiva writes: ‘I spoke to the bachur clearly and told him that in my opinion he should learn for at least four or five years, as Hakadosh Baruch Hu has no shortage of businessmen, but there is a shortage of talmidei chachomim and yereim’.

Rabbi Yehuda Ze’ev Segal (1919-1993), son of Rabbi Moshe Yitzchak Segal. An outstanding Torah scholar and tzadik. At the age of 20 he left England to study at the Yeshiva of Mir and learnt together with Rabbi Chaim Shmulewitz and became close to the Mashgiach Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz. Returned to England in 1933 and assisted his father in the running of the Manchester Yeshiva, and later succeeded him as Rosh Yeshiva. Rabbi Segal was renowned throughout the Torah world for his great piety and many would come to him for his blessings. He worked tirelessly to promote greater care in avoiding forbidden speech and the study of the works of the Chafetz Chayim.

Rabbi Meshulam Ashkenazi (1902-1995), son of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh – Rebbe of Alesk in Stansilawow and Vienna, and son-in-law of Rabbi Klonymos Kalman Yolles of Sambor. The Rebbe of Stanislawow - London was active in promoting the upholding of traditional Torah standards, the construction of mikvaos and in other orthodox communal activities in London and other English communities.
