RABBI YOSEF SHALOM ELYASHIV – ORIGINAL LETTER TO HIS SON-IN-LAW RABBI CHAIM KANIEVSKY REGARDING THE LOCATION OF THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF ERETZ YISRAEL.

Rare and interesting letter in which the leading halachic authority of his time, Rabbi Elyashiv, expresses his view about the location of the southern border of Eretz Yisrael. Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky writes on the subject at length in his Derech Emuna and rules that the settlement of Yerucham is within the border and Mitzpeh Ramon is outside it. This issue is of great halachic significance, as to the status of produce of that fertile area with regard to Shemitta and other Eretz Yisrael – related halachos. In this letter (which is published in Derech Emuna) Rabbi Elyashiv writes: I went over all you write regarding the southern border of Eretz Yisrael. Whilst it is built on a firm basis in the words of the Talmud Bavli and Yerushalmi, Tosefta, Rishonim and Acharonim, nevertheless I feel some doubts remain until the Redeemer will come and rule on this...’
This letter is the source for Rabbi Elyashiv’s view on this important issue.

Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012), son of Rabbi Avraham of Gomel and grandson of the famous Lithuanian gaon and kabbalist Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv – author of Leshem Shevo V’achlama. Settled in Yerushalayim together with his parents and grandfather in 1924. Studied independently at Batei Medrash in the Mea Shearim neighbourhood. Son-in-law of Rabbi Aryeh Levin. Joined the Ohel Torah Rabbinical College in 1940 and succeeded his father as Rabbi of the Tiferes Bachurim where he gave a popular daily Talmud shiur. Renowned for his exceptional diligence in Torah study and for his remarkable mastery of all areas of Torah. One of the most widely recognised halachic authorities of his time, whose opinion was sought on all important contemporary Torah issues.

Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky (b. 1928), son of Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky – who was known as ‘the Steipler’ [being a native of Hornosteipel in Ukraine] and son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Settled in Eretz Yisrael in 1934, studied with his father and at Yeshivas Tifferes Tzion and Yeshivas Beis Yosef in Bnei Brak and the Lomzhe Yeshiva in Petach Tikva. During this period, he also studied with his uncle Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz – the Chazon Ish, and completed the study of the entire Talmud Bavli at the age of 17. After his marriage he continued his Torah studies at Kollel Chazon Ish, of which he took over leadership after the passing of his father. Rabbi Kanievsky is renowned for his outstanding diligence in Torah studies and for his vast knowledge of all Torah literature. He is consulted from all over the world on Torah questions, as well as for his advice and blessings and has authored numerous Torah works.
