ATTRACTIVE CIRCULAR LETTER PUBLISHED BY LEADERS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITIES OF AMSTERDAM AND THE HAGUE SUPPORTING BRITISH CHIEF RABBI SHLOMO HIRSCHEL’S CALL FOR MACHATZIS HASHEKEL FUNDS TO BE DONATED TO THE POOR OF ERETZ YISRAEL.

An attractive circular letter sent to the community of Lyon in France, supporting the call of Chief Rabbi Shlomo Hirschel of London for Machatzis Hashekel donations before Purim to be sent to the poor of the Holy Land. Rabbi Shlomo Hirschel is referred to with exceptionally complimentary titles, reflecting the high esteem in which he was held by European communities of his day.
The letter, which is attractively reproduced, is signed by the head of the Pekidim Ve’Amarkalim, R. Tzvi Hirsh Lehren, as well as by his co-workers R. Avraham Prinz, R. Zalman Rubens and R. Yaakov Meir Lehren, and dated Amsterdam 1828. Hebrew and English text in parallel columns.

Pekidim Ve’Amarkalim were a group of respected members of the Dutch Jewish community involved in raising large sums in Western Europe for distribution to poor residents of Eretz Yisrael. They were highly influential in communal and religious affairs in Eretz Yisrael and elsewhere, as reflected in contemporary rabbinic responsa and correspondence.

3 sides. 23 x 37 cm. The English section is complete, but the Hebrew text is slightly damaged with loss of a few lines at right edge.
Impressive red wax seal of Admas Kodesh Nachalas Avos, almost complete. Postal stamps.
