IMPORTANT LETTER TO SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE EXPRESSING OPPOSITION OF YERUSHALAYIM’S ASHKENAZI AND SEFARDI RABBIS TO THE CONTROVERISAL ESTABLISHMENT OF A ‘KOLLEL AMERICA’.

Important letter, dated 1879, opposing the attempt by Eastern European immigrants, who had American citizenship to form their own Kollel in Yerushalayim in order to raise funds from American Jews, who had formerly supported the Vaad Haklali and other Kollels. The leading Ashkenazi and Sefardi Rabbis of Yerushalayim appeal to Sir Moses Montefiore to publicise in an American Jewish newspaper that American Jews should not to be taken in by these attempts and should continue to send their donations to the poor of the Holy Land as before.

Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi (1811-1880), Dayan and Av Beis Din of the Sefardi community in Yerushalayim, who succeeded Rabbi Chaim David Chazan as Chief Rabbi and Rishon Letzion.

Rabbi Shmuel Salant (1806-1909), studied Torah in Salant and Volozhin, son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Zundel Salant and settled in Yerushalayim in 1841, where he became Av Beth Din of the Ashkenazi community.
