ISRAEL ZANGWILL - COLLECTION OF CORRESPONDENCE WITH LUCIEN WOLF .

Five important and interesting letters written by famous Anglo-Jewish novelist and activist Israel Zangwill to the noted Anglo-Jewish writer and historian Lucien Wolf.

1. January 1916 ‘I have ceased to have any relations with the Jewish Chronicle and am so angry about their treatment of the Conversionist Question that I would have liked to write repudiating their narrowness, only I did not know what would be the right channel.’

2. January 1916 ‘I now send you the translations. The poems are very inferior to the last I tried my hand on – our own Piyutim – but I have done what I could with them’

3. March 1916 ‘I have been reading an article in a magazine called ‘Twentieth Century Russia’ by Andrayev, which seems to be the one from the book. You really ought to publish soon. I can see no reason whatever why the Foreign Office would object.’

4. March 1916 ‘The former says 2 p.m. prompt, and the latter says, ‘The Chair will be taken at 2.30’ Knowing Jewish ways, I shall arrive at the latter hour unless I hear from you to the contrary’

5. March 1916 ‘Many thanks for the tickets. I will try to come as early as possible, but I am quite content to speak as late as possible because I think it holds the Meeting together if there is somebody they still want to hear. In any case, the official positions of Alexander and Montefiore justify them in speaking first. I think too, it would be well to sandwich in a Yiddish speaker before getting to me, because there may be some who only understand Yiddish’

All the letters are typed in English and signed by hand, the last letter including four lines in Zangwill’s handwriting.

Israel Zangwill (1864-1926), famous Anglo-Jewish writer, born to a poor immigrant family from Latvia. He was educated at the Jews Free School in London’s East End, and later taught there. He recorded contemporary events, which served later as the background for his novels. Zangwill supported the movement for the establishment of a Jewish homeland and joined a Jewish delegation to Eretz Yisrael in 1897. After the 7th Zionist Congress rejected the proposal for a Jewish homeland in Uganda, Zangwill left the movement and founded the Jewish Territorialist Organisation. His famous works include: The Children of the Ghetto and Dreamers of the Ghetto.

Lucien Wolf (1857-192?) famous Anglo Jewish journalist, author and communal activist who campaigned on behalf of Jews and other minorities. He was strongly anti-Zionist and established the Anglo Jewish Association. Author of many books and articles on Jewish history and contemporary affairs.
