Indonesian Dayak Headhunters Sword w/Scabbard
Indonesia, Dayak Peoples Mandau headhunters sword with scabbard. Zoomorphic horn handle with an intricately carved pommel in complex scrolling and decoration. Tightly wrapped and resin coated twisted fiver grip. Good blade double edge with a long series of multiple pierced and openwork curlicue to the top of the forward section. The uppermost haft of the blade and ricasso heavily inlaid in silver scrolling and a long series of brass inlaid circles (some absent). Scabbard in wood and carved bone covered with tightly wrapped rattan and attached to a rawhide leather with cover and belt in rattan. Known for their long standing tradition of taking heads and souvenirs like scalps or body parts the headhunters have now been outlawed and Dayak peoples mostly used the sword as a working weapon such as a machete. Size 27" L, blade 21 1/2" L
