Sculptures cast at the Susse Ferers factory (Paris) are, without exaggeration, in museums around the world and are regularly sold at the largest auctions. In the early 1900s, Susse Ferers made 23 models of Pierre Turgenev's sculptures. The Bulldog sculpture is the only one of all the master's works that exists in three sizes: 46 cm, 19 cm and 12 cm. Source: Kjellberg, Pierre (1994). Bronzes of the 19th Century. Atglen, Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. p. 627. The author's title of the sculpture is Mighty Defender, due to reverse translation errors from French to German and English, it is published in some catalogs and books under the name Cuitrassier a la charge.
Pyotr Nikolayevich Turgenev or Pierre-Nicolas Turgueneff [P.Tourgueneff] (1853-1912) - French sculptor, descended from the Russian Turgenev family. Son of the ideologist of Decembrism N. I. Turgenev.
He was born into the family of the Russian thinker Nikolai Turgenev and Clara Viaris, the daughter of an Italian marquis who served as a general in the French army. He was born, lived and died of angina pectoris in Paris; however, despite this, he was a great connoisseur and appreciator of Russian culture. He maintained friendly relations with his distant relative I. S. Turgenev, who also preferred to love Russia from Paris.
He took up sculpture seriously in 1865, when he began working under the guidance of the famous sculptor
Emmanuel Fremiet, and his successes were so great that already in 1870 his statuette "Orlov Trotter" was accepted for an exhibition at the famous Paris Salon. It should be noted that horses in a variety of compositions were a favorite theme in the artist's work throughout his life; he became a recognized master in this direction. For example, on the advice of I. S. Turgenev, he executed a life-size group "Russian Peasant with a Pair of Horses". And as an assistant to the battle painter
Edouard Detaille, who received the task of reproducing the French army for the past century for the Paris World Exhibition of 1900, he made 23 life-size horse figures.
The result of Pyotr Nikolayevich's excellent work in sculpture, and especially in the reproduction of equestrian groups, was his fame in France and numerous orders, mainly from the French Ministry of War. In 1897 he was awarded the Legion of Honor.
His other hobby was working on images of Russian cultural and historical figures. It is worth noting the statue of Ermak on horseback, the monuments to Alexander II and Alexander III, and the bust of I. S. Turgenev. Also known are a life-size group of French barge haulers (for which real barge haulers posed); the marble group "Source"; a statue of a young girl playing the flute.
The name of Pyotr Nikolayevich became known in Russia only in the 1900s. In 1907, he was elected an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences.
