Dvar Shmuel. Venice, 1702, copy of R. Avrohom Yehuda Ha’Cohen Schwartz of Ma’ad and his son R. Naftali Ha’Cohen Schwartz

Dvar Shmuel. Venice, 1702. With a Compilation about the Struggle against Sabbateanism.

R. Avrohom Yehuda Ha’Cohen Schwartz (1824-1883), was born in Ma’ad, Hungary and at the age of 14 went to study under the Chasam Sofer in Pressburg. He was one of the most outstanding talmidim in Pressburg and was particularly close to the Chasam Sofer. In 1861, he was appointed Rav and Rosh Yeshiva in Bergszas. In 1881, he was appointed Rav in Ma’ad where he served until his passing. After his passing his grandson, R. Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich, published his work of responsa Kol Aryeh, after which he is known. He was world renowned as a tremendous Talmid Chochom and Posek and was one of the most influential Rabbonim of his era.

R. Naftali Ha’Cohen Schwartz (1846-1897), was a son and Talmid of R. Avraham Yehuda Schwartz (Kol Aryeh). An outstanding Talmid Chochom, he received Semicha from the Atzei Chaim, R. Shimon Sofer and the MaHaRa”M Shick. Following his marriage, he served as Rav in Beregsaz and later moved to Vishiva where he led a prominent Yeshiva. Upon the passing of his father, he succeeded him as Rav in Mad, where he established one of the largest Yeshivos in Hungary. Author of Beis Naftali and other works.

The author was one of the leading rabbis of Venice and of Italy, who was also known for his battle against Sabbateanism. On leaves 95-97 there is a report by the rabbis of Venice who interrogated Natan of Gaza in 1668, and a letter of protest against the cancellation of fasts by the Sabbateans. There is also correspondence between the author and Rabbi Yaakov Sasportas of Amsterdam regarding the issue of Shabbetai Tzvi. A long foreword by the author's son appears at the beginning of the book, with the author's biography and the process of his wondrous demise.
