Letter by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv Condemning the Smoking of Cigarettes
A letter handwritten (not signed) by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv to Rabbi Dov Etinger.
In the letter, Rabbi Elyashiv thanks Rabbi Etinger for sending him his book, which clarifies the severity of smoking and the damage it causes one's health and the halachic prohibition to smoke since a Jew has a duty to maintain his health.
Among others, Rabbi Elyashiv writes: "His important book
… which aims to clarify all the aspects of the problem of smoking … I give him my blessing and God willing, he will
succeed in conveying the dangers of smoking and may this be his reward".
