The Polemic over Nylon Tallit! A Response from the Illustrious Rabbi Yonasan Steif Zt''l.

A responsum from the great Rabbi Yonasan Steif Zt''l where he discusses the law regarding tzitzit on a garment made from nylon. The letter was addressed to the esteemed Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Neiman of Pupa Zt''l, from Montreal.

This was part of a major debate among the great rabbis of the generation concerning the wearing of tzitzit made from nylon garments.

The revered Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, author of Igrot Moshe (Orach Chaim 2:1), was asked whether, in the hot summer months when it is difficult to wear a wool tallit, one could fulfill the mitzvah of wearing tzitzit with garments made from newer materials, such as nylon. He ruled that such garments are exempt from tzitzit. Similarly, the author of Ateret Moshe from Makova, of blessed memory, also ruled that nylon garments are exempt (Moriyah, Year 14, Vol. 5-8, p. 86).

However, Rebbi Yekutiel Yehuda Halberstam, author of Divrei Yatziv (Shu"t Divrei Yatziv, Orach Chaim 3), disagreed with them and ruled that nylon garments are indeed obligated in tzitzit. This view was also supported by the righteous Rabbi Binyamin Zilber in his *Shu"t Az Nidberu* (Vol. 7, Siman 52-54).

Before us is a wonderful supplement to this debate of the great rabbis of blessed memory, from the great Rabbi Yonasan Steif, who joins the opinion of those who are stringent!

The illustrious Rabbi Yonasan Steif (1877–1958) was one of the leading halakhic authorities of his generation. In his youth, he studied under the Shevet Sofer in Pressburg. In 1907, he served as a dayan and maggid in Gúta, (Kolárovo), and in 1912, he was appointed as a member of the Beit Din in Ungvar. In 1923, he was appointed as Av Beit Din of Budapest.

Through the grace of God, he survived the horrors of the war and, after the war, settled in the United States, where he was accepted as the rabbi of the "Adath Yereim" congregation of Vienna. He also served as the vice president of the "Union of Rabbis of the United States and Canada" alongside the president, t he Satmar Rebbe, of blessed memory, who held him in the highest regard.

The great Rabbi Moshe Feinstein referred to him as the "greatest of the generation."

Rabbi Steif was renowned as one of the foremost halakhic authorities, and his rulings were sought by many. Among his works are Chadashim Gam Yeshanim on the Talmud, Shu"t Mahar"i Steif, and others.
