German book: For Mother and Child: Celebrating 40 Years of a Woman's Lodge J. Schlesinger, Berlin, 1928 With handwritten personal inscription by Minna Schwarz on first inside cover page, written to Eugen Wolbe (see below). Back cover is detached from book, front cover has some minor wear and tear. Book is in overall good condition. - In 1888, Minna Schwarz (1859-1936) founded the first women's club of the lodge ”Bnai Brith” in Berlin. In 1913 she set up a mother and toddler home in the courtyard of this house for single and destitute mothers. In time, also a maternity counseling center, a state-recognized training center for nursing and maternity care was also set up. In 1932 a Jewish retirement home was additionally established. In 1940, they were evicted as being a ”Jewish house”. More than 100 of the last residents and employees were deported from here to the extermination camps. Professor Eugen Wolbe (1873-1938) was a German educator, publicist and autograph collector. Part of Wolbes estate is in the Austrian Literature Archive in Vienna. He was the father of Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe (1914-2005), a Haredi rabbi, best known for authoring Alei Shur.
