Max Märtens, Winter in Oberbayern
Light-flooded depiction of snow-covered houses and a church against a mountain backdrop, under a loosely clouded sky, watercolour, mid-20th century, signed lower right "M. Märtens", minimally stained, framed under glass, dimensions of depiction approx. 19 x 27 cm. Artist's info: Germ. Landscape painter (1887 Braunschweig to 1970 Gstadt/Chiemsee), first pupil at the school of arts and crafts in Braunschweig, studied at the institute of arts and crafts in Berlin, then worked as a church painter and craftsman in Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, from 1908 in Munich, went on study trips to Hungary and Italy, from 1918 he turned to landscape painting, 1928 first stay in Gstadt at Chiemsee, afterwards regular stays at Chiemsee, Member of the Reichsverband bildender Künstler Deutschlands and of the Künstlerbund Niedersachsen, in 1938-44 he organised the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung in the Haus der Deutschen Kunst Munich, in 1943 bombed out in Munich and moved to Gstadt am Chiemsee, here in 1948 founding member of the "Notgemeinschaft Bildender Künstler Gstadt", which later changed its name to "Gemeinschaft Bildender Künstler Chiemsee", 1956-69 its chairman, Source: Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Bruckmann "Münchner Maler des 19./20th century", Dressler and Internet.
