Dorsal view of a nude reclining woman, lithograph in red chalk, c. 1930, ligatured monogram "M" in an oval below the image on the left, light brown margins, framed under mount and behind glass, mount cut-out c. 18 x 25.5 cm. Artist info: actually Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Jean Maillol, important French sculptor, painter and graphic artist. Sculptor, painter and graphic artist (1861 Banyuls-sur-Mer until 1944 Banyuls-sur-Mer), attended the Collège Saint Lois in Perpignan, 1881 he went to Paris and attended a drawing course at the École des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Léon Gérome, afterwards he visited the school of arts and crafts for some months, from 1885 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts with the salon painter Alexandre Cabanel. In 1896 he married Clotilde Narcis, who became his ideal model in the following years. In 1899 he moved to Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, in 1903 again to Marly-le-Roi near Paris, in 1904 he met the art collector and patron Harry Graf Kessler and travelled with him to London in 1904, 1908 to Greece and 1930 to Germany, 1913 first personal exhibition outside France at the Kunstkring Rotterdam and exhibition participation at the Armory Show in New York, 1928 exhibition at the Galerie Flechtheim and 1933 at the Kunsthalle Basel, 1944 died a few days after a car accident at his home, Source: Vollmer, Wikipedia and Internet.
