View of the entrance and courtyard of honour of the Baroque hunting and summer palace built in 1679-86 by Louis XIV near Marly/Ile-de-France with courtiers and arriving carriages of the royal entourage, on this Nagler (1843) writes: "... J. Rigaud devoted himself exclusively to the art of etching, and produced numerous sheets that deserve greater attention, ... Many offer views of Paris, the royal castles and other state buildings. As a complete work they have the main title: "Maisons royales et autres palais remarquables en Francais [Eng: Royal Houses and Other Remarkable Palaces in France]". ...", the present sheet belongs to the series listed by Nagler "... 27) Six different views of the castle of Marly qu. fol. ...", coloured copper engraving on handmade paper, 1st half of the 18th century, inscribed in French at the lower centre of the plate "Diverces Vuës du Chateau Royal de Marli - Cette premiere vuë est prise à la principale Entrée proche la grille en arivant de Paris (Eng: Different views of the Chateau Royal de Marli - This first view was taken at the main entrance near the gate if you are arriving from Paris]" underneath indication of the reference address "à Paris chez l'Auteur ruë St. Jacques vis a vis le College du Plessis [Eng: in Paris at the author's house in the Rue St. Jacques opposite the College du Plessis]", signed on the left below the image "J. Rigaud In. sculp. [J. Rigaud, erdacht, gestuchen]" and on the right privilege "avec Privilege du Roy [engl.: with royal permission]", traces of folding and age, framed behind glass and passepartout in a classical moulding frame with squared corners in second use, plate dimensions approx. 26 x 48.5 cm. Artist's info: French painter, draughtsman and graphic artist (1680 Puyloubier/Bouches-du-Rhône until 1754 Paris), around 1707 joined the office of the director general of the French fortifications Le Pelletier, lived in Provence, finally until 1720 in Marseille, from 1720 worked as etcher and publisher in Rue St. Jacques in Paris, from 1730 publication of the important series "Les Maisons Royales de France [Eng: The Royal Houses of France]", which was completed by his nephew Jean-Baptiste Rigaud, 1733 and 1736 journey to England, source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Müller-Singer, Nagler and Bénézit.
