Matthäus Merian the Elder, View of Carlsbad
View from a hill to the Bohemian town situated in the valley, today Karlovy Vary, legend in the lower left area and titled "Carlsbad" in the upper centre, copper engraving, c. 1650, usual folding line in the centre, browned and lighter stripe in the centre, framed under passepartout and behind glass, image dimensions c. 20.3 x 32.0 cm. Artist's info: Swiss engraver, bookseller and publisher (1593 Basel to 1650 Schwalbach), 1606-09 pupil of the engraver Dietrich Meyer and the glass painter Christof Murer in Zurich, 1610 with Friedrich Brentel in Strasbourg, 1625 took over the art dealer's shop of his father-in-law Johann Theodor de Bry in Frankfurt am Main, after his death his sons Matthäus the Younger and Caspar and later their descendants continued the publishing house under the name "Merians Erben" until 1727 and completed his main works "Topographia Germaniae" and "Theatrum Europaeum" , source: Thieme-Becker and Internet.
