Carl Auböck, "leaning on treestump"
Maker's mark (Carl) "Auböck" Vienna stamped on the bottom as well as the inscription "Made in Austria", model number 4068, dark patinated cast brass, abstract man leaning against a tree stump on a naturalistic plinth, somewhat rubbed in places, h 12 cm. Artist info: Austrian painter and designer (1900 Vienna to 1957 ibid), was trained as a bronze worker and chaser in his father's business producing Viennese bronzes, his father encouraged the creative talent of his son and both daughters, studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna and at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste ibid, was a pupil of Johannes Itten, Auböck followed Itten to Weimar and became a pupil in the metal workshop and preliminary course at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1919, he separated from Itten and travelled to Florence with other "Viennese" students of Itten, he worked briefly at a metal workshop in Müglitz (Czech Republic) and in 1923 joined his father's workshop in Vienna, in whose range of products he gradually incorporated the visionary ideas of the Bauhaus and more recent art movements, and which his descendants still run in his spirit today.
