Arthur Kaufman (1888-1971) was an avant-garde Jewish painter who was a key figure in post-expressionist and objectivity movements.
Kaufmann was imprisoned by the Nazis in 1933 and released, along with many of his colleagues, from the Dusseldorf School of Applied Arts.
He moved to the United States and went to a career as a famous portrait painter.
He specialized in descriptions of well-known Jewish men such as the Hollywood actor Edward G. Robinson, the physicist Albert Einstein, and the composer and painter George Gershwin (whose affidavit was responsible for Kauffmann's safe departure from Germany). His portrait of Gershwin is now being held by the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution.
