The hanger is a torture device consisting of a rectangular wooden frame
Slightly raised from the ground with a roller at one or both ends
The victim's ankles are fastened to one cylinder and the wrists are chained to the other
As the investigation progresses a handle and a ratchet mechanism attached to the top pulley are used to very gradually increase the tension on the chains which causes excruciating pain.
Using pulleys and levers it was possible to turn this roller on its axis, stretch the ropes until the joints of the sufferer were dislodged and eventually separated.
The incarceration of the prisoner on the shelf allowed for further torture at the same time.
