Gratitude of the Russian Princess for the Prayers for Her Health in Jerusalem! An Interesting Letter Sent to Rabbi Shmuel Salant – Petersburg [1879]
A unique and interesting letter by Rabbi Pinchas Rothenberg to Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the rabbi of Jerusalem. Petersburg, 1879. A leaf handwritten by him on both its sides.
Rothenberg lets Rabbi Salant know that he "had informed the great prince's wife, Maria, and she thanked him kindly for the prayers for her health, and that God had given her a kind heart and virtues and may He grant her longevity".
Later in the letter, Rothenberg informs Rabbi Salant that he will be sending him a hundred Rubel – forty for himself and sixty to be given to the poor who had prayed for the princess' health.
Apparently, the princess is princess Maria Alexandrovna (1824-1880) the wife of prince Aleksandr II Nikolayevich (the would-be Russian Tzar).
The difficult climate of Saint Petersburg did not benefit the sensitive princess, who suffered from various illnesses and that is why the residents of Jerusalem prayed for her health as described in the letter,
Good condition.
