Extremely Rare polemic Proclamation by the Renewer of the Jewish Settlement in Meron and and the Founder of the 'Bar Yochai' yeshiva – [1911] – Bibliographically Unknown! With a Handwritten Polemic Letter about the Proclamation
A polemic proclamation printed by rabbi Naftali Chanales, a well-known activist of Safed. With important handwritten additions. The Ottoman period, 1911. Extremely rare, most likely, the only copy in the word.
From rabbi Chanales' words, which are printed on the proclamation:
"I was the first founder to create a new settlement in the village of Meron near the grave of Rashbi and his son and I bought their a ruin, and I had total devotion and gave there my fortune and possession and body and soul … and we established there a new settlement … and a large yeshiva… the Bar Yochai Yeshiva …"
"Nevertheless, I never got to carry out my vision since a stranger came to our borders". Here he attacks one of the leaders of the community of Safed, Rabbi Eliezer Ya'akov Podhorzer and hurls accusations at him.
The letter also refers to the Rebbes of Chortkov and Boyan.
On the second part of the leaf, a letter by the Gabaim, founders and managers of the new settlement in Meron and the Bar Yochai Yeshiva, Rabbi Yehoshua Bein of Warsaw, Rabbi Avraham Brandwein and Rabbi Gedalya Klein.
On the reverse side of the leaf, a long, handwritten letter (by Rabbi Naftali Chanaes or actually one of his opponents) referring to the proclamation: "From this you will receive evidence regarding all the enterprises here, that they are based on a lie…"
Rareness: the proclamation is bibliographically unknown, most likely, by research literature as well. It does not appear in libraries in Israel and is not listed by the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book.
Importance: a very important proclamation, most likely the only one in the world, which includes first-hand information about the renewal of the Jewish settlement of Meron during the Ottoman period.
Source: the collection of Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim, the vice chairman of Ha'Edah Ha'Charedit of Jerusalem.
Size of item: 93 years.
Condition: Good. A tear (slit) in the upper part of the leaf.
