Calculations of the Redemption and the End of the Days
A large leaf with a composition about calculating the Redemption, written in the first person, most likely the author's autograph.
The author begins with quoting Maimonides in HIlchot Melachim about the man who does not believe in the coming of the Messiah and add that although the Sages have warned against calculating the Redemption, there is a permitted way to do so.
After his preface, the author notes dates of historical events mentioned by the Bible, according to the verses and Midrashim. According to his calculations, the Messiah will come in the year of 5543 [1783] and the Resurrection will be in 5593 [1803].
In the literature of calculations of the Redemption, similar calculations appear only by the intellectual philosopher Reb Naftali Hertz Ullman, who lived during those years the leaf before us was written and authored the composition 'Sod Ha'Mashiach'. However, we do not know if there is a connection between the composition before us and Reb Ullman's composition. One way or the other, in several compositions from that time the year 1783 (or 1782) is referred to as the year of Redemption. It should be noted that in 1782 (according to some) the Vilna Gaon left his house to immigrate to the Land of Israel, probably believing the Messiah was about to come.
An impressive, orderly manuscript. Very nice script. It seems it was made for hanging on the wall in order to remember the coming of the Messiah each and every day. Beyond the specific calculations contained in it, the manuscript is an indication of the great expectation of the Jewish Nation for the coming of the Messiah.
Size of leaf: 27x38cm.
Condition: Good. Thick, restored leaf. Single words are missing.
