Manuscript – Responsa and Chiddushim by Rabbi of Virtzburg and Son Rabbi Shlomo Bamberger Av Beit Din of Senheim
Manuscript, responsa and Chiddushim, by Rabbi Yitzchak Dov HaLevi Bamberger Av Beit Din of Virtzburg.
Responsa in Halacha and Chiddushim on Sugiot of the Shas. Copied from his notepads in handwriting of his son, Rabbi Shlomo Bamberger Av Beit Din of Senheim. Includes: Chiddushim which Rabbi of Virtzburg copied from his rabbi, the Ga’on Rabbi Avraham Bing, and correspondence on matters of Halacha which Rabbi of Virtzburg conducted with giants of his generation. Contains outstanding lengthy and diverse correspondence with his associate the Ga’on Rabbi Mencahem Mendel Kargoi Av Beit Din of Fürth (author of Gidulei Tahara).
Critique and comments added to margins of some of sections by copyist Rabbi Shlomo Bamberger (under pseudonym: Ashel – Amar Rabbi Shlomo). Apparently, a considerable portion of the manuscript was not yet printed.
The famous Ga’on Rabbi Yitzchak Dov HaLevi Bamberger (1808-1879, Otzar HaRabbanim 11282) was appointed to the Virtzburg Rabbinate in 1840. Was considered one of the leading Torah giants of the generation and many rabbis of Germany were his disciples. Authored important compositions in Halacha and Talmud (Yad HaLevi, Neti’ah Shel Simcha, Melechet Shamayim and more). Despite his explicit request that his responsa not be printed, following his death his sons approached the giants of the generation, the Ga’on Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor, the Netziv of Volozhin and the Maharil Diskin, with the question of how to deal with his writings. They were instructed not to be apprehensive and were encouraged to enable the public to gain from the printing of his responsa.
His son, the Ga’on Rabbi Shlomo HaLevi Bamberger (1835-1918, Otzar HaRabbanim 18389). Genius and author of books, served as Rabbi in several communities, was Av Beit Din of Senheim (Alsace), printed writings of his father together with his brother Rabbi Moshe Aryeh HaLevi Bamberger Av Beit Din of Kissingen. See collection of letters by him – item 443.
