Two Carpets Made by "Bezalel"
Two carpets made by the carpet department of "Bezalel". Jerusalem, [between 1906 and 1914].
Wool yarn tied onto a cotton warp (stamped: "Bezalel").
Decorated with geometrical patterns.
The carpet department opened immediately at the time Bezalel was founded, in May 1906. In the beginning, Shmuel Ben-David, Avraham Bar-Adon and Ya'akov Kanterovitz headed the department. The carpets were also made as housecrafts in the workers' shops. Wool and linen carpets were made in the Bezalel workshop until World War I; carpets made in this period have the "Bezalel" inscription.
