"Shiviti" with Illustration of Tombs in Eretz Israel - Persia
Hand-drawn "Shiviti", with illustrations of holy grave sites in Eretz Israel. [Persia, early 20th century].
Ink and paint on paper.
"Shiviti" written on paper. In the center appear three Menorahs - two consist of Psalms ("Shir LaMa'a lot..." and "LaMenatze'ach…") and the third Menorah consists of words from "Ana BeKoach" liturgy. Blessings and various verses appear in circles near the Menorah's bases and in illustrations shaped as Tablets of the Law which appear above them.
The frame is entirely illustrated with domes and arches, symbolizing holy grave sites in Eretz Israel, as titled in handwriting: Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Moshe and Zipora, Rashbi, Rabbi Haim Vital, Shmuel the Prophet, King David, Yosef HaTzadik, Rabbi Yosef Karo, Yehoshua Ben Nun, and more. On upper part appear names of four holy towns: Safed, Hebron, Tiberias and Jerusalem.
A similar "Shiviti" is incorporated in a Ketubah from Isfahan, 1890, illustrated by Moshe ben Yeshuah, in the collection of the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel-Aviv (no. MHEJ 446).
35X24 cm. Fair-good condition. Tears, creases and folding marks, professionally restored. Some damages to text. Some stains. Framed. Unexamined out of frame.
