Letter from Rebbe Yechezkel Paneth of Deyzh, Author of Knesset Yechezkel
Letter handwritten and signed by Rebbe Yechezkel Paneth Rabbi of Deyzh. [Deyzh (Dej), 1927]. Interesting letter addressed to the leaders of the Vásárhely (Târgu Mureș) community, who had invited him to come spend a Shabbat in their city: "…I was very privileged by your prestigious letter, in which you honored me by inviting me to spend a Shabbat with you, yet at this point I am unable to travel. Especially since I already promised the Ghiriş (Cîmpia Turzii) community to spend the upcoming Shabbat Vayera with them, and it will be difficult for me to be absent from my home for two consecutive Shabbatot. Certainly, in several weeks I hope please G-d to fulfill your request, and obviously I will inform you a week or two prior which Shabbat I will designate to spend with you…". Rebbe Yechezkel Paneth, the Knesset Yechezkel (1869-1929, Encyclopedia of Chassidut II, pp. 174-175), a foremost pious Hungarian rabbi in his generation. Son and successor of Rebbe Moshe Paneth Rabbi of Deyzh, and grandson of Rebbe Menachem Mendel Paneth Rabbi of Deyzh. He served as rabbi of Urișor and Marosújvár (Ocna Mureș), and in 1903, succeeded his father in Deyzh. As results from this letter, R. Yechezkel was amongst the renowned rebbes who travelled to other communities to strengthen them by holding a Shabbat Tisch there and delivering inspirational musar discourses. [1] leaf, official stationery. 23 cm. Approx. 18 autograph lines and signature. Good-fair condition. Stains. Wear and minor tears to folds.
