Mishnah Berurah Set - "Inspected" - Warsaw-Piotrkow, 1907-1912
All six parts of Mishnah Berurah, commentary to Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, by R. Yisrael Meir HaKohen of Radin, author of Chafetz Chaim. [Warsaw-Piotrkow, 1907-1912, all the volumes are stereotype copies of previous editions]. Each volume bears a "Mugeh" (inspected) inscription on the endpaper (in ink), most of them presumably handwritten by the author, the Chafetz Chaim. The Chafetz Chaim was particular to examine each book for printing errors (sheets which were exchanged or blank leaves) prior to releasing them for sale, for fear of transgressing the prohibition of stealing and cheating, should a faulty book be sold at the regular price. Each book which he inspected received a "Mugeh" (inspected) inscription on the endpaper (reputedly, he was adamant to write it himself, lest his assistants write "Mugeh" without sufficient scrutiny). Many of these inscriptions have disappeared over the years, due to rebinding or erasing of pencil inscriptions. Penciled inscription on the endpapers of all the volumes (apart from one): "Donated by Mr. Menachem Nachum son of R. Gershon Gottfried, in the memory of his father-in-law Yosef Leib, 16th Sivan 1922". 6 volumes. Part I: 151, [1] leaves. Part II: 154 leaves. Part III: [1], 195 leaves. Part IV: [1], 196-290 leaves. Part V: 153, [1] leaves. Part VI: 164 leaves. Approx. 23 cm. Dry, brittle paper. Overall good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Worming to a few volumes. Detached leaves and a few tears. Original bindings, mostly detached and broken, lacking spines, with damage and tears.
