HaHigayon of Chacham Rabbi Shimon - Basel, 1527 - First Edition of Milot HaHigayon by the Rambam
The book (Milot) HaHigayon of Chacham R. Shimon, Logica Sapientis Rabbi Simeonis, by R. Moshe ben Maimon - the Rambam, with Latin foreword and translation, by Sebastian Münster. Basel: Johann Froben, 1527. First edition. Hebrew and Latin. Milot HaHigayon was presumably composed by the Rambam in his youth. The book, originally written in Judeo-Arabic, concisely presents the essentials of Aristotelian logic, which impacted the Rambam's philosophy throughout his life. Münster's Latin translation is based on the first translation of the book to Hebrew, by R. Moshe ibn Tibbon. It is unclear why Münster decided to name the book after Chacham R. Shimon, even though the name of the true author appears at the beginning of the book ("Said Rabbenu Moshe son of R. Maimon…"). Some conjecture that he named the book so in recognition of Prof. Simon Grynaeus, theologist, humanist and leading proponent of the Protestant Reformation, from whom he received the manuscript of this composition, as he relates in the dedication at the beginning of the book. [62] leaves. 15.5 cm. Good condition. Stains, dampstains. Light wear and damage to title page and margins of other pages. Early parchment binding, with damage.
