Midrash Rabba - First Edition - Constantinople, 1512 - Signatures and Glosses
Midrash Rabba on the Torah. [Constantinople: Samuel ibn Nachmias, 1512]. First edition. Originally printed without title page, the first page is blank. The division into sections of Bereshit Rabba (97) and Vayikra Rabba (38), is different from that of subsequent editions (regarding the printed version of Midrash Rabba, see Introduction to Bereshit Rabba by Chanoch Albeck, Berlin 1931, pp. 117-129. Regarding Vayikra Rabba, see: Mordechai Margaliot's preface to Midrash Vayikra Rabba, Jerusalem 1960, pp. XXXVII-XXXVIII). Ownership inscription and signatures in Italian script on the front endpapers: "This book belongs to the dear R. Yosef Jarach of Torino", "This is my Rabbot, Yosef Jarach", and others. Marginalia in Italian script (faded, some trimmed). This edition does not include Midrash Rabba on the Five Megillot, which was printed as a separate book, Pesaro, 1519. See following item. Incomplete copy. [216] leaves. Lacking 13 leaves: Leaf [105] in the middle of Shemot, leaves [213-214], and [10] final leaves. Last five leaves detached, with tears. 26.5 cm. Fair - fair-poor condition. Stains. Extensive wear to some leaves. Worming to several leaves. Tears and damage affecting text, partially repaired with paper. Large tears to several leaves. Final leaves detached and damaged. Early leather binding, damaged and partly detached.
