Collection of Documents, Booklets and Photographs Documenting the Suez Crisis – Documentation of the Israeli Side and of the Egyptian Side
Approximately 240 documents, orders, notices, mailings, books and photographs, documenting the Suez Crisis from both the Israeli and the Egyptian sides. Israel, Gaza and Egypt, 1955-1957. Hebrew, Arabic, French and some English.
The collection contains: 12 booklets printed in Egypt including army and tactic handbooks dealing with fighting techniques of the IDF, propaganda recounting Israel's war crimes, the retreat of British forces from Egypt and notices encouraging young men to join the Fedayeen. * Diary written by an Egyptian soldier who was positioned in the Gaza Strip in 1956 documenting pre-war times (the journal was discontinued with the break-out of the Suez War). * Document and bravery decoration awarded to Mohamed Al-Sid Alhashash, an Egyptian soldier who served in the Gaza Strip during the war (his photo, ink-stamps and commander's signature appear on the document). * Guidelines for identifying IDF badges, units and ranks. * Approximately 140 envelopes sent by Israeli, Egyptian, French and English soldiers (some of the letters and postcards sent inside the envelopes are enclosed). * Approximately 25 postal forms and postcards for war prisoners of the Red Cross and Magen David Adom (some used). * Hand-drawn map of the Sinai Peninsula and Southern Israel (ink and colored pencils), marked with the movement of forces conquering the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip and crowning Abu Ageila. English. * Six proclamations and orders published by the IDF in the Gaza Strip and in the Sinai Peninsula. * Documents, postage stamps, photos and other paper items.
Most of the items appear in several copies. Enclosed are pictures cutout from newspapers and booklets. Many items are arranged in albums, accompanied by photos, notes and translations.
