Three Medals Belonging to a Soldier in Zion Mule Corps - World War I
Three British war-medals awarded to the soldier I. Bernstein who volunteered to the "Zion Mule Corps" in World War I.
"The 1914-15 Star" medal, "British War Medal", and "Victory Medal". The name of the soldier (private I. Bernstein) and the name of the unit to which he volunteered - "71 PTE, I. Bernstein. Zion Mule C". are engraved on all three medals (on verso of the Star medal and on the edges of the two other medals).
The Zion Mule Corps was the first among Jewish corpses founded by the British during World War I following an idea formulated by Ze'ev Jabotinsky in Egypt and supported by Joseph Trumpeldor. The corps which served in fact as a transport unit of some 650 Jewish soldiers was commanded by Colonel John Patterson, while Joseph Trumpeldor served as his deputy (he replaced Patterson when the latter resigned due to an illness).
1914-15 Star: 6X4.5 cm. Some stains. Victory medal and War Medal: diameter 3.5 cm. Stains. Attached to original cloth ribbons sewn around a large metal pin (for wearing on uniform).
