Femme Juive, Courtiere qui porte ses Marchandises aux Jeunes Dames Turques qui ne peuvent Sortir. Engraving by Philippe Simonneau, from the book "Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant" [collection of one hundred prints presenting different people in the Levant]. [Paris, 1714].
This engraving, plate no. 65 in the book, was created after a work by the Flemish-French painter Jean Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737) and depicts a Jewish woman bringing her merchandise to women in the Sultan’s harem (women were not permitted to leave the harem, but Jewish women were allowed to enter and served as intermediaries between the Sultan's women and the outside world). Signed in the plate: "P. Simonneau fil. Sculp ".
25X35.5 cm. Good condition. Slightly darkened margins, stained. One corner is damaged, with an open tear.
