A Letter by Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bendet Feivelson About the Beit Yosef Yeshiva in Dvinsk - 1930
A letter in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bendet Feivelson, rabbi of Shokian (Lithuania), regarding the new yeshiva in Dvinsk which was established by Rabbi David Budnik, and students who had escaped from the Novardok yeshivas in Russia gathered there. The yeshiva in Dvinsk was the center for six yeshivot in Latvia, including the yeshivot in Riga, Ludza and Liepaja. This letter was most probably written in 1930, at the time that the yeshiva was founded.
Rabbi Feivelson describes his great happiness that "the noble ones of Israel from the 'Beit Yosef' yeshivot escaped with the grace of G-d from the land of blood, with self-sacrifice, and after many travails they came to a safe dwelling place in Dvinsk which is exalted by its great scholars…". Rabbi Feivelson calls to support the new yeshiva, "and the House of Joseph will be a flame - to light up the entire House of Yaakov".
A long letter, full of feelings of thanksgiving to G-d and admiration for the Torah scholars and their self-sacrifice.
Rabbi Yisrael Binyamin Bendet Feivelson (1865-1937), a student of the Kelm and Volozhin yeshivot, one of the important rabbis in Lithuania. From 1898 he was the Av Beit Din of Basiglio and from 1924 the Av Beit Din of Shokian.
