Das Neue Ghetto (the New Ghetto) - Herzl - First Hebrew Edition
Das neue Ghetto by Theodor Herzl. A four-act play translated from German into Hebrew by Reuben Breinin. Published by "Achi'Asaf", Warsaw, 1898. First edition.
The play takes place in Vienna, 1893. The play was written under the influence of the Dreifus Trial, which Herzl had surveyed as a journalist.
The play was written during 17 days only! At the center of its plot, a convert attorney who is trying to leave the social ghetto that has been forced on Western jews, yet fails. At the end of the play, he is murdered by an anti-Semite aristocrat who has offended him as a Jew. While on his deathbed, the attorney whispers: "Jews, my brothers, a day will come and you will be permitted to live – when you know how to die". In a louder voice he says: "Leave! Leave the ghetto!"
Samuel's death was meant to serve as a warning that the situation of the European Jews has become intolerable. The play demonstrates Herzl's national outlook.
The play was performed in more than 20 places throughout Europe.
