Historical Letter for the Rescue of Rabbis of Warsaw – 1940 – Rare
The letter was sent from Vilna, Lithuania in 1940 while Lithuania was under the Russian rule. It is printed on the official stationery of 'Histadrut Mizrachi Torah Ve'Avoda – Kaunas". The writers of the letter, Rabbi Dr. Zerach Varhaftig and Rabbi Dr. Shmuel Zanvil Kahana, appeal to the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Ha'Levi Hertzog, with a request to attain immigration permits for Rabbi Yitzchak Nissenbaum, an important rabbi, author and exegesist who served as the last president of 'Ha'Mizrachi' in Poland and for Rabbi Shlomo David Kahana, the father of Rabbi Shmuel Zanvil (the writer of the letter), who was the last rabbi of Warsaw and was known as 'The Father of the Agunot' due to the thousands of Agunot he released after the Holocaust. Unfortunately, Rabbi Nissenbaum did not succeed in immigrating to Israel and was killed in the Warsaw Ghetto. Rabbi Kahana was rescued and immigrated to Israel. He served as the rabbi of the Ancient City of Jerusalem.
Rabbi Dr. Zerach Varhaftig was bron in Russia to his father Rabbi Yerucham Varhaftig. He studied at the Warsaw academy and escaped to Lithuania when the war broke out. He acted for smuggling thousands of Jewish refugees from Poland to Lithuania and from there to Japan with the assistance of Righteous Gentiles. He was especially known for saving the students of the Mir Yeshiva. He immigrated to Israel and was one of the heads of 'Ha'Poel Ha'Mizrachi'. Later he served as the Minister of Religious Services.
Rabbi Dr. Shmuel Zanvil Kahana was born in Warsaw to his father Rabbi Shlomo David Kahana, one of the greatest rabbis of Poland. He did much for the religious Judaism and the establishment of Jewish schools. He immigrated to Israel and served as the CEO of the Ministry of Religious Services.
