Brazilian Silver Balangandan Amulets
Ca. 1900 Brazilian silver Balangandan amulets. 13 amulets hammered from sheets of silver, forming various exotic fruit shapes and other forms. Balangandans were worn at the waist by black indentured and slave women and functioned as amulets and symbols of fertility. Made for their own womenfolk by enslaved men from the Kingdom of Benin. Some amulets combined with wooden parts. Height of each amulet ranges from 10-20 cm. Total weight: 1325 grams. Minor flaws to some of the amulets (dents). Not marked, silver tested.
