CESPEDES DEL CASTILLO CARLOS MANUEL: (1819-1874) - CESPEDES DEL CASTILLO CARLOS MANUEL: (1819-1874) Cuban Revolutionary. First President of Cuba in Arms in 1868. Known as the ''Father of the Motherland'', Cespedes is considered a Cuban hero who freed slaves and leaded the declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868. A fine D.S., ` C.m.de Cespedes ´, one page, 4to, Guaimaro, 26th April 1869, in Spanish. The partially printed document bears a very attractive revolutionary vignette to the heading and the printed title beneath ”Republica de Cuba - Comité de los Representantes de la Revolución Cubana” (''Republic of Cuba - Committee of the Representatives of the Cuban Revolution”), bearing also a blind embossed revolutionary seal to the upper left edge. To the right side of the page a printed text refers to the law approved by the President of the Republic related to the freedom of slaves, and ordering the person owning the property where three slaves work, states ` Al margen verá usted los patrocinados a su cargo que han de quedar exentos de patronato, comprendidos en el articulo de la ley, afin de que se sirva usted hacerlos concurrir a dicha Residencia del Ejecutivo el dia primero proximo para proveerlos de sus correspondientes cedulas de libertad ´ (Translation: ” On the side of this document you will see the appointed persons under your charge who are to be exempt from patronage, included in the article of the law, so that you may pleased have them attend the Executive Residence on the first day of next month, date to provide them with their corresponding freedom certificates. ”) The document lists four names annotated to the left margin, being the slaves to free, `Cristobal - Aniceto - Ofelia - Prudencio´.
