LONDON JACK: (1876-1916) - LONDON JACK: (1876-1916) American novelist, a pioneer of commercial fiction whose works included The Call of the Wild and White Fang , both set in the Klondike Gold Rush. D.S., Jack London , being a signed cheque, Oakland, California, 27th February 1906. The partially printed cheque, completed entirely in London´s hand, is made payable to Appeal to Reason for the sum of $6.00. An official circular bank cancellation only very marginally touches one letter of the signature. Some light staining and age wear, G Appeal to Reason was an influential American socialist weekly newspaper founded by Julius Augustus Wayland in 1895 and published from Girard, Kansas, from 1897. It became one of the most widely circulated socialist newspapers in the United States, supporting the Socialist Party of America after its foundation in 1901 and reaching a circulation of more than half a million copies weekly by 1910. Its contributors included prominent socialist and literary figures such as Eugene V. Debs, Upton Sinclair, Helen Keller and Jack London; Sinclair's The Jungle was famously serialised in its pages in 1905.
