Foss commences his letter by proclaiming ´Just heard the good news! You are just the man I myself thought of as No.1 candidate when I first knew about the job at Juilliard´ and continues to state ´You probably know that Bill, at one time thought of me, as a possible candidate, an idea that would have never occurred to me. The board did right in choosing you. You are the best qualified. I am happy to see that this important position stays in the hands of a composer, and one I have known and liked for so long. More power to you` . Signed ( ´Lukas Foss´ ) a second time at the head of the first page above the printed address. Together with an unsigned carbon typed copy of Menin´s reply, one page, 8vo, n.p., 21st June 1962, thanking Foss for their letter and warm thoughts and remarking ´I hope that after next season we will be able to sit down and work more closely together, for the benefit of music. I know this has always been your aim, as it has been mine´ .
