SKORZENY OTTO: (1908-1975) - SKORZENY OTTO: (1908-1975) Austrian-born German SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer of World War II, Knight's Cross winner with Oak Leaves. Skorzeny is remembered for his involvement in the Gran Sasso raid which rescued Benito Mussolini from custody in 1943. T.L.S., Otto Skorzeny (twice), one page, 4to, Madrid, 7th December 1972, to Docteur Fernand Fossier, in French. Skorzeny states that he was delighted to have read Fossier´s letter, remarking that he wasn´t aware of a poster of the Gran Sasso action in Paris in 1943, and continuing ´J´ai déduit de votre deuxième paragraphe que vous avez écrit vous-même un article sur cet évènement. En cas positif, il serait très aimable de votre part de m´envoyer cet article´ (Translation: ´I gather from your second paragraph that you yourself wrote an article about this event. If so, I would be very grateful if you could send me a copy´ ). Skorzeny also writes that it will be a pleasure for him to sign the poster, and further makes a reference to Hanna Reitsch, ´Mme. Hanna Reitsch est aussi une grande amie pour moi et j´ai recu justement il y a quelques jours une lettre d´elle´ (Translation: ´Mrs. Hanna Reitsch is also a great friend of mine, and I received a letter from her just a few days ago´ ). In a postscript signed and dated 19th February 1973, Skorzeny explains ´Malheureusement je suis tombé le 10.12.72 au sol et pur ça j´ai eu une luxation sévère dans mon épaule droite et des difficultées à écrire. Le samedi j´ai vous envoyé l´affiche signée´ (Translation: ´Unfortunately, I fell on 10th December 1972 and suffered a severe dislocation of my right shoulder, which made it difficult for me to write. I sent you the signed poster on Saturday´ ). A few heavy creases to the left margin, otherwise VG Hanna Reitsch (1912-1979) German aviatrix and test pilot who flight tested many of Germany's new aircraft during World War II.
