KARAJAN HERBERT VON: (1908-1989) - KARAJAN HERBERT VON: (1908-1989) Austrian conductor. A good signed 7 x 9.5 photograph of Karajan in a half-length pose conducting at the Salzburg Festival in 1970. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to a lighter area of the image. VG Karajan served as the Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival from 1956-60. After 1960, he joined the festival's Board of Directors and remained its dominant artistic leader and conductor until 1988. 1970 was a particularly significant year in Herbert von Karajan’s long association with the Salzburg Festival, marking the première of his celebrated production of Verdi’s Otello , with Jon Vickers, Mirella Freni and Peter Glossop. The production subsequently formed the basis of Karajan’s historically important film of the opera and is regarded as one of the defining Salzburg productions of his career.
