COLLINGWOOD CUTHBERT: (1748-1810) British Admiral, a notable partner to Horatio Nelson in several of the British Naval victories during the Napoleonic Wars. Concluding page of an A.L.S., Collingwood, one page, 4to, n.p., 18th May n.y. (1808?), to an unidentified Lord, headed 'Postscript to letter of May 18th'. Collingwood writes, in full, 'I wish when your Lordship goes to town, you would push endeavour to push the decision about the Saint Domingo Prize money - I have been shabbily off about prizes - the things taken here of most consideration are the Turks - and they are lying at Malta, where I am told their cargoes are selling under the direction of Commissioners appointed for that purpose - the service in the Archipelago has been most severe during the winter - a great many men lost, & many prisoners who have been wrecked amongst the Turks - and the vessels they have sent down are rotting at Malta. They give droits to some people - who make snug things of it - what I get would not maintain me - were I not so much at sea that I am often without necessaries - and I cannot make applications about money - or anything that may have the appearance of taking care of myself.' With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor creasing and age wear to the edges, VG £200-300 On 15th June 1808, whilst at sea off the coast of Cadiz, Collingwood wrote a letter to his wife stating, in part, 'A decision was lately given in my favour in the Court of Admiralty, on the claim of Sir J. Duckworth, Louis, and Cochrane, to share the St. Domingo prizes among themselves, and exclude me.' (from A Selection from the Public and Private Correspondence of Vice Admiral Collingwood, Volume II of the Fifth Edition edited by G. L. Newnham Collingwood, 1837).
