CUSTER GEORGE: (1839-1876) American Army Officer and Cavalry Commander in the American Civil War and American Indian Wars. A.L.S., G A Custer, Brig. Genl., one page, small 8vo, Headquarters, 1st Brig., 1st Div. C.C. A.P. [i.e. Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac], 24th April 1864, to an unidentified correspondent. Custer writes, in full, 'Believing it to be for the interests of the service and particularly for the interests of his regiment I most respectfully recommend that this officer's resignation be immediately accepted'. One minor smudge to one letter of the signature and some very light age wear to the extreme edges of the letter. VG £1500-2000 In 1864, the same year as the present letter, the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac were reorganised under the command of Major General Philip Sheridan and Custer led his 'Wolverines' to the Shenandoah Valley where they defeated the army of Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Early in the Valley Campaigns, which had commenced in May 1864, the month after Custer recommended the resignation referred to in his letter.
