Thomson acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter and in replying states that he is sure 'the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh will be very happy to do what they can in compliance with your wishes', adding 'They would, I am sure, be glad to send copies of all their Proceedings to you in return for copies of your journal should you wish for such an exchange', asking that Olivier write to the Secretary of the Royal Society officially regarding the proposal and further remarking 'The Council has no arrangement by which special reports could be sent to you, but I think it probable they might be able to arrange, if you desire it, to have a special correspondent, who might be a student in the University competent to do the work well, and who would be proud to act as your correspondent for a moderate pecuniary remuneration'.
