The quotation comprises the opening two paragraphs from The Russia House, beginning 'In a broad Moscow street not two hundred yards from the Leningrad station, on the upper floor of an ornate and hideous hotel built by Stalin in the style known to Muscovites as Empire During the Plague, the British Council's first ever audio fair for the teaching of the English language and the spread of British culture was grinding to its excruciating end.' EX £80-100 The spy novel The Russia House by John le Carre was published in 1989 and the title refers to the nickname given to the portion of the British Secret Intelligence Service that was devoted to spying on the Soviet Union. A film version of the novel, starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer was made in 1990.
