[MAXIMILIAN I]: (1832-1867) - [MAXIMILIAN I]: (1832-1867) Austrian Archduke who became Emperor of the Second Mexican Empire from 1864 until his execution in 1867. A vintage unsigned carte-de-visite photograph, the sepia albumen print by Peter Kaeser of Vienna being a reproduction of a lithograph by Karl Edler von Stur entitled Miramar Querétaro, dating from around 1867-68, the allegorical composition showing the seated Carlota, Empress of Mexico, in the foreground and holding a small lunette of roses, beneath an angelic figure holding a black veil in her outstretched arms, while a vignette above depicts Maximilian standing moments before his execution at Querétaro. With the photographer´s imprint to the lower mount and verso. VG Peter Kaeser (1825–1897) was a prominent Viennese art dealer, publisher and dealer in photographic and graphic reproductions, whose Kunsthandlung at Bognergasse 2 was active during the 1860s and 1870s.
