[NELSON HORATIO]: SCOTT ALEXANDER JOHN (1768-1840) Scott writes from HMS Victory in the company of Nelson - ´ a man I esteem & am attached to´´ - [NELSON HORATIO]: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. SCOTT ALEXANDER JOHN (1768-1840) English Anglican chaplain who served in the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Scott was present at the Battle of Trafalgar, serving as Nelson´s personal chaplain, and had also served as his personal secretary. A close friend of Nelson, Scott was with the Admiral as he died aboard HMS Victory . A small series of three A.Ls.S., A. J. Scott (twice) and once with his initials AJS , unusually written sequentially over three sides of a bifolium, 8vo, HMS Victory , 9th September 1803, individually addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Partridge, and also incorporating a note addressed to Annina, presumably their daughter. Scott commences his first letter, to Mr. Partridge, by writing ´Do you recollect a clergyman named Scott who calls to mind with pleasure your attention to him at Leghorn - I am that very person´ , continuing to explain that he has spent some time in the West Indies, suffered from illness ( ´particularly last year, was struck by lightning & wounded at the same time by the explosion of some gun powder ´) and is ´now Chaplain & foreign secretary to Ld. Nelson, in which situation tho´ having little to do, I feel this climate recruit me very much & in point of circumstances I am well off & have a living in England & one at Jamaica - am still a batchelor & intend to remain so´. Scott adds that he had written to his corresponednt from the Gulf of Florida, and from Copenhagen ( ´after the battle´ ) but did not receive any replies, although has been assured that they are well and received the letters, further adding ´Wjen my old friend Sir Hyde Parker retired I went to the West Indies again, which I left in January last & returned to England in a mutilated & dying state - was recommended to try this climate & the war breaking out came in this situation as on of the Etat Major with a man I esteem & am attached to´ . Scott continues with a letter to ´My dear Mrs. Partridge´ , recollecting with ´flattering pleasure´ her kindness to him, and praying to God that she is well. There then follows a note addressed to Annina ´whose marriage I heard of only in 1801´ , and wishing her ´many things in the most friendly manner - if she recollects one who tormented her so much´ . Scott completes his series of missives with another letter to Mr. Partridge, containing several instructions, ´Remember me to Hall if in the land of the living . shou´d you write to me - pray not a word of Politicks & avoid names of Persons even direct to me, simply to The reverend Alexander John Scott - inclose your letter to some correspondent at Naples & let him leave it at Mr. Elliot´s, Our Minister there.....´ . With address panel to the verso ( ´Monsieur Partridge, Ardenya´ ) bearing a docket indicating that a reply was sent to Scott on 26th September, and also featuring a series of mathematical calculations. An interesting series of letters, particularly for their references to Lord Nelson. Some light staining, a few small, neat splits to the edges, and a small area of paper loss, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, G
