A very good letter signed by two Marshals of Napoleon. L.S., ` Augereau ´, a large and bold ink signature, one page, folio, Paris, 26th July 1799, to the Minister of war Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, in French. With autographed postcript by Bernadotte, in his capacity as Minister of war, .signing at the base with his initials. Augereau, in his capacity as General and representative of the citizens states in part ` La circonstance actuelle nécessitant l´emploi de plusieurs officiers généraux, je crois rendre service à la chose publique en vous désignant, Citoyen Ministre, le général de Brigade... je me suis convaincu de son attachement à la république et des moyens qu´il peut apporter à sa défense.´ (Translation: ” Given the current circumstances requiring the deployment of several general officers, I believe I am serving the public interest by appointing, Citizen Minister, Brigadier General... I have become convinced of his commitment to the Republic and the resources he can contribute to its defense.”) Very small minor age wear, otherwise VG General Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte was appointed Minister of war on 3rd July 1799 by the Directory, only few weeks before the present letter was written. He held this key post during a brief period of military crisis, seeking to reorganize the army before being replaced two months later in September 1799.
