BISMARCK OTTO VON: (1815-1898) Bismarck makes final negotiations on the day of the signing of the Italo-Prussian Alliance - BISMARCK OTTO VON: (1815-1898) German statesman and diplomat, Chancellor of the German Empire 1871-90. Bismarck asks his correspondent if it would be possible to delete the word German from Article 2 of their Treaty, remarking ´De maniere qu´il ne reste que les allies de l´Autriche, vu que parmi ces derniers il pourrait se trouver, quoiqu´il n´y en ait aucun indice jusqu´ici, Le Danemark que l´Autriche, nous dit-on, y a vivement invité´ (Translation: ´In such a way that only Austria's allies are left, given that among the latter there could be, although there is no indication of it as yet, Denmark, which Austria, we are told, has strongly invited to join´ ). Bismarck concludes his letter by stating that he will expect the Count at 2 o´clock. An historic letter in which Bismarck suggests an alteration to a secret military pact with Italy. VG The Italo-Prussian Alliance, a military pact between the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Prussia was signed in secret by Bismarck and his Italian counterpart in Berlin on 8th April 1866, just hours after Bismarck wrote the present letter. The pact established the terms on which Italy and Prussia would enter hostilities against Austria and their respective compensations in the event of a victory. For Italy, this was to be the Veneto; and for Prussia, other territories of Austria. The alliance led to the Austro-Prussian War (June-July 1866) and at the end of the conflict, owing to Prussian victories, Italy obtained the Veneto and Prussia placed itself at the head of the new North German Confederation, with Bismarck installed as Chancellor.
